It would be an overstatement to say that collective intelligence is a trend in Web 2.0. Its possibilities are being verified through services like Wikipedia, but collective intelligence is no more than organized individual opinions. Many may disagree on this but it is difficult to understand how its future potential will be maximized through blog.

In spite of the potential of collective intelligence, we bestow bigger significance to the individual creativity or individual intelligence because of the fact that the Web is a network of many individuals. In other words, if you understand how individual inspiration, individual voluntary study and imitation of other individuals have been a driving force in the growth of human culture, collective intelligence is a natural occurrence rather than a source of power for the next generation Internet.

It will be as follows if we apply the progression of collective intelligence to the corporate: Worker in charge comes up with an idea, draws it up and submits it to a supervisor for an approval. Upon examination, initial idea is tweaked to minimize risk, losing its originality and a case is made upon approval from the highest ranking officer. This process is somewhat similar to collective intelligence of wikipedia in a sense that many users, not one, come to an agreement (unspoken consent included) in defining a knowledge. This seems quite logical but due to the risk minimizing, rather than profit maximizing, characteristics of men; originality, unexpected and the unpredictable variables are eliminated and thus reach a general conclusion in which everyone can understand.

But what of now?

System mentioned above is from the industrial age; and in the Internet age, a reorganization is occurring to give focus on individual creativity rather than of a group scale and it’s scale is becoming smaller and smaller, all the way down to a single person. Group culture is not a befitting system for the Internet age where creativity counts even if we don’t mention the Genius theory of Samsung, where a genius alone can support 10,000 people.

Eventually, collective intelligence can only be seen as a mere attempt by many scattered individuals and what’s important is that the value of individual intelligence will be of greater importance than collective intelligence. Then what can be used to objectively evaluate individual intelligence? The answer is blog contents.

It is critical at stage to minimize group influences but instead work to develop the potential of individual intelligence with belief and passion. You are the value of future.
